Advocating for Self-Insurers

The Virginia Self-Insurers Association, Inc. (VSIA) was organized in 1992 as a non-profit corporation to promote the principles of sound and beneficial self-insurance under the workers' compensation laws applicable to Federal and State workers' compensation in Virginia.

VSIA serves as the dedicated voice for self-insurers, businesses, and local governments on workers' compensation matters before the Virginia General Assembly and the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission.

A Strong Record of Advocacy Success:

VSIA has a proven track record of achieving positive outcomes in both legislative and regulatory arenas. Our direct involvement has been instrumental in securing legislation that:

  • Reinstated the established 500-week limitation on various workers' compensation benefits.
  • Expanded the acceptable forms of security for self-insurers, providing greater financial flexibility.
  • Mandated the use of cost-effective generic drugs in applicable workers' compensation cases.
  • Spearheaded the enactment of a statewide workers’ compensation medical fee schedule, curbing significant annual cost escalations.

Actively Engage in Regulatory Matters:

VSIA actively participates in various Commission studies and regulatory proceedings concerning vital areas such as: the Uninsured Employer's Fund, self-insurance program regulations, expedited case handling, electronic data interchange (EDI) initiatives, and the cost of medical record copies, consistently championing the interests of self-insurers.

Education, Communication, and Networking

Beyond our core advocacy work, VSIA delivers significant additional value through our informative educational programs and annual meeting, timely communication channels, and valuable networking opportunities.
